Best front and rear dash cams

A front camera only tells half the story. These two-camera kits record the road ahead and the car behind you, so a rear-end collision is on video too.

How to choose a front and rear dash cam

Look at the rear camera, not only the front. Many kits pair a good front camera with a weak 1080p rear unit. All three picks here use a Sony STARVIS 2 sensor at the back as well, which is what keeps a plate readable in your rear window at night.

4K or 2K? 4K gives you more detail to zoom into when a car is further away. 2K files are smaller, so the same card holds more hours. If you mostly drive in town at low speed, 2K is enough.

Plan the rear cable. The rear camera connects to the front unit with a long cable that runs along the headliner. It is a one-hour job with a trim tool, or a quick job for any car audio shop.

Do not forget these

A dash cam is only as reliable as the card and power feeding it.

High-endurance microSD cardMade for constant recording. Two cameras fill a card fast, so 128 GB or more is sensible.

Questions buyers ask

Is a rear dash cam worth it?

Yes. Rear-end collisions are among the most common crashes, and a front camera cannot record them. A rear camera also captures tailgating and what happened after an impact.

Can I install a front and rear dash cam myself?

Usually yes. The front camera sticks to the windscreen and the rear camera cable tucks under the headliner and trim. Hardwiring for parking mode is the harder part; many people pay an installer for that.

How much storage do I need for two cameras?

Two cameras write roughly twice the data of one. A 128 GB card is a sensible minimum for a 4K front and 2K rear kit, and 256 GB gives more hours before old footage is overwritten.
