Best dash cams for truckers

A truck driver is blamed first and asked questions later. These cameras record more angles for more hours, so your side of the story is on file.

What truck drivers should check before buying

Storage first. Long shifts fill small cards in hours. Look for 1 TB card support or SSD recording so a full week is still there when you need it.

Vehicle voltage. Many trucks run 24V systems. Check that the power adapter or hardwire kit you buy supports your vehicle's voltage before you connect it.

Rear camera cable length. Kits are designed for cars. In a long cab or a van, measure the cable route first; a rear camera on a trailer is not practical with these consumer kits.

Company and legal rules. If you drive for a fleet, ask before fitting your own camera. Cab-facing cameras and audio recording are regulated differently from country to country.

Do not forget these

A dash cam is only as reliable as the card and power feeding it.

High-endurance microSD cardLong shifts need capacity. Go for 256 GB or more from a card built for constant recording.

Questions buyers ask

Can I use a car dash cam in a truck?

Yes, the cameras themselves work in any vehicle. Check two things first: that the power supply supports your truck's voltage, and that the rear camera cable is long enough for your cab.

How much storage does a truck dash cam need?

It depends on resolution and the number of cameras. A multi-camera system recording all day can use well over 100 GB per shift, so large cards or SSD recording make sense for long-haul work.

Do truck drivers need a cab-facing camera?

It is optional. A cab camera can show you were attentive before a crash, which helps in a dispute. Some fleets require them and some drivers prefer not to have one; check your company policy.
